Alright, so last week, mr. Radical was voted as the person who the Planetarium wants to know about. This week, submit questions to him in this thread. At the end of the week (Friday at 9:00 PM EST [Saturday 2 AM GMT]), the questions will end and they will be submitted to Mr. Radical to answer.

When it comes to LBP, would you consider yourself more of a creator or a player?

I’d have to say that I fall somewhere in between. In terms of skill, I’m probably a better player than I am a creator, but I find myself spending much more time creating than anything else. Whenever I play, I tend to see things that creator could have done better. “Maybe if they did this a little differently, maybe if they merged these elements…” Afterwards I’ll end up losing hours just messing around in create mode, seeing what sort of tweaks I could come up with. Whenever I see something cool IRL, or in another game, I’ll usually think about how I could recreate that in LBP. I frequently find myself rushing into create to test an idea. I don’t find that same enthusiasm that often when playing.

You're the leader of the Survivor game. What gave you the idea to start Survivor in LBP?

A lot of this response has been posted a few times before... I'll elaborate a bit to make it worth rereading. I've always been a Survivor super fan. I've been nuts about the show since it first came out. Over the ten plus years that the show has been on the air, I've run a few of my own versions of the game, usually at school. As I got older, this became less and less manageable, until I finally got to the point where I gave up on these homemade seasons.

Back in the early days of LBP1, I was already getting disappointed by the lack of variety offered by most LBP community contests. Rarely did I see anything outside of creating a level, contraption, or costume, and when I did, it was usually a simple high score challenge. I wanted to see something new. I wanted to see something with greater risk, greater effort involved, but also greater rewards.

I saw an opportunity to satiate my desire for change and give myself the ability to run more rotations of Survivor. Back in November of 2009, I posted an announcement thread on LBPCentral. I was looking for feedback, ideas, and potential player interest. From there, I ended up with 16 members of the LBPC community ranging from some of the most well known to people who joined the site just to play.

Initially, I thought it might have been cool to get some sort of recognition for running something as big as it was. Outside of some very limited create help, I ran the first four season completely by myself. Part of what drove me during the earliest seasons was some sort of vain hope that Media Molecule might notice me. Though after the amazing experience I had with one completed season, I knew that I'd continue with the game even if I had to do it anonymously.

What is your favorite costume to wear? Why?

My favorite costume is the full spacesuit that I stickered to turn it gold. Way back when, I wanted to recreate a scene from the movie Sunshine in LBP. In that scene, one of the characters puts on an insane golden space suit. My outfit was a feeble attempt to recreate that, and it stuck.

What do you enjoy doing most on LBP?

Bringing new experiences to the masses, and changing up expectations whenever I can. There are millions of levels at this point. With that much already out there, it’s hard not to feel like you’re experiencing the same thing over and over. The biggest joy I get is when I make something that may seem simple, but leaves people wondering what the heck just happened. In a good way of course.

Were you expecting a MOD spot?

Not exactly. When I started here, there weren’t mods. They just had the admins, and they promoted Baghead to admin status in my early Planetarium period. For awhile, all of the admins seemed to be missing in action, so I joked around with Smurfetta and Xerorogue that we should just crown ourselves as Mods since we tended to be the most active people on the site at the time. When there were actual mods announced, I was initially surprised that our group was overlooked, but each of the choices made sense. Nick was such a huge part of the site in its early days, Leklack was great with her contributions to LittleBigPicks, and Holguin was a beast when it came to the creation aspect of LBP. I didn’t see the need for more than 3 mods, so I figured our ship had sailed, and that we’d forever be shadow mods. Then a spot opened up.

What about Planetarium do you love?

You can actually breathe around here. The small size of this forum makes it a heck of a lot nicer to hang around than some of the larger sites. The extreme size elsewhere leads to an insane amount of clutter… it’s hard to keep track of what you’re doing on a site like Central or Network. And you’ll end up with very small percentage of forum members that seem to care elsewhere. Here, it seems like everyone gives it their all.

Since becoming a member on Planetarium, has this increased your publicity on LBP or increased the publicity of Survivor LBP?

Our publicity has definitely increased. Part of it has to do with what I was saying about the other sites. It’s easier to notice us here, especially when we had our own forum set up for the competition. Also, the members here seem to care more about being active members of the community, so they tend to actually look at anything that pops up.
Beyond the Planetarium specific stuff, I have to thank gamegirl523, Smurfetta5683, and Radio Playstation for really getting the word out there to as many people as possible.

What upcoming projects do you have planned for LBP?

My team is putting the finishing touches on the recently announced LBP version of The Hunger Games. Players wanted a competition that didn’t depend on socializing or voting, so that’s our answer. There’s also season 9 of Survivor: LBP that’s in the planning stages with a few big changes to how it’s run.
I’ve also got to post the recap for season 8. It’s usually pretty easy to write those… I just type up what I remember happening, maybe inserts a few key messages from players. I ended up with SO MUCH information this time out, it’s hard to filter it all down to post a coherent narrative.
I also had an idea for a very special review series unlike what most of you have seen before. My aim with that is to entertain… Can’t say much more on it just yet.
Finally, I’ve had an idea for an actual level on the backburner for what seems like an eternity. I’m hoping to finally get that going sometime soon.

What finalized your decision to switch from LBPCentral to Planetarium?

Sort of the same thing I’ve said a few times… Unless you’re someone special, it’s hard to stay afloat on Central. Despite the huge user base over there, I’d have to put an incredible amount of energy into recruiting each season there, and we’d barely end up with enough players. And from those that we did end up with, there’d usually be a good third that just weren’t into it. Planetarium users rock. We haven’t had that trouble over here in the 3 seasons that have taken place here.
Also, over there we ran things in group pages. Those ended up being very, very hidden. No one could see what we were up to. And there was a limit of 5 groups per user over there. At one point, I spent a few weeks begging the admin over there to erase some older groups just to give us more room. Here, we were given our own forum and as much room to grow as we wanted. The first season we ran over here was also held at Central and LBLand at the same time. This was the best place to work from, and we never looked back.

What's your favorite color?

Red. I think. I noticed that when I’m fighting crime, I tend to favor a combination of Royal Blue, Lime Green, and Black in my costume… so take that for what you will.

What first attracted you to the world of LittleBigPlanet?

For me, that very first footage sold me on it. I vaguely remember a sped up video of someone creating on the savannah background. What they built was insanely rudimentary compared to what you’ll see these days, but what I saw blew my mind. We’d finally be able to easily create our own video games! We’d be able to do whatever we wanted, and publish for all to see. For myself and for anyone else that grew up playing games, this was a dream come true.

What other obsessions do you have besides Survivor and The Hunger Games?

Food. I love eating.... like really, really love eating. Anything and everything. Being half Italian and half Latin, I ended up eating a lot of amazing stuff at home. I think the varied menu that I got at home led me to appreciate food from just about everywhere. And I enjoy cooking almost as much as I enjoy eating. Eating is just so much easier.

Competition. Any sort of competition really gets me going. Board games, basketball, billiards, cards, competitive cooking, competitive anything. I tend to get a bit overcompetitive at times, to the point that no one related to me will play Monopoly with me anymore. I don't NEED to always win, I just need to try as hard as I possibly can anytime the opportunity presents itself.

Getting lost in a good story. It doesn't matter what the format, if I find an amazing story, I'll end up blocking out the rest of the world until I get to the end of it. I remember losing a few nights of sleep and days of school when I marathoned The Hunger Games. I recently lost some sleep to an anime series called Spice and Wolf. When I was young, I never had the best imagination. As I got older, I felt kind of bummed about that, and ended up trying to rectify that when reading/watching/experiences a good story. Instead of just being an observer, I'll completely immerse myself in whatever world is being presented to me. While I'll get more enjoyment out of an average story, if something comes along with a depressing ending... I generally get my emotions kicked.

What is your favorite story level?

It has to be the bunker from LBP1. Don't get me wrong... I thoroughly enjoyed all of the LBP2 story levels, especially those found in Eve's world. I just have such strong memories of my first trip through LBP1. The bunker looked great, had such crazy obstacles to overcome, and really felt like a hardcore test of everything that I'd learned up to that point. I loved that run through the electric wheel. And the feeling when I finally aced it... greatness.

Thanks for the kind words. Like I said before, I've had this idea floating around for awhile now, but I've lacked the time to really do anything with it. My LBP time is limited, and most of it tends to be dominated by these competitions. My two contributions to The Hunger Games play like standard platformers, and once they get unlocked for the general public, you'll be able to experience the first pure platformers I've built in a long time. Once the competitions slow down a bit, I plan on getting to that other level.

In LBP, I like to plan ahead, and generally do whatever I can to keep myself from having to do things on the spot. My self imposed deadlines don't always agree with that train of thought though... IRL, I'm all over the place. I'll generally keep a basic idea of what needs doing, and let things flow however they may, but when there's something particulary serious, then I'll be a bit over-prepared.

What is your favourite material?

Ever since everything became so tweakable in LBP2, most of the materials lack an identity beyond how they look... So working on pure visual aesthetic, I'd say it's a tie between a tweaked spooky cloud sponge, and the rubber wires. The spooky clouds with their animation turned off make a great ice effect. When properly stickered, the wires can look like anything, with my favorite being vines.
